2 True Grit

“We had clear title to 480 acres of good bottom land on the south bank of the Arkansas River not far from Dardenelle in Yell County, Arkansas(11)”.

- Charles Portis was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, which is right around where he based the novel. He graduated from college in Arkansas and worked on various Arkansas magazines and newspapers for a good part of his career. He most likely chose this setting for his novel because he knew everything about it, from the culture and history to all the kinds of people that tended to live there.
