"They say I love nothing but money and the Presbyterian Church and that is why I never married.. I care nothing for what they say... I would marry an ugly baboon if I wanted to and make him cashier... A woman with brains and a frank tongue and one sleeve pinned up and an invalid mother to care for is at some disadvantage (224)."
This quote shows that Mattie Ross has not changed one bit. She still has the same sarcasm and wit in her voice and is still living her life in the style she did when she was 14 years old. Most stories like this show how a character develops through hardship by learning different life lessons and such, but Portis makes a point to show that Mattie Ross doesn't change or amend her character at all. True Grit isn't about learning life lessons. It is about how true courageous people like Mattie Ross and Rooster Cogburn stay true to themselves even in the face of their worst fears.
