"As
they looked the whole world became perfectly silent, and a flight of gulls
crossed the sky, first one gull leading, then another, and in this
extraordinary silence and peace, in the pallor, in this purity, bells struck
eleven times, the sound fading up there among the gulls... and the car went in
at the gates and nobody looked at it (21)”.
In
the scene with the car and the airplane Woolfe shows the characterization of
society. The people are obsessed with mundane boring happenings. Their lives
consist of gossiping, talking about each others’ clothing and who is throwing
the best party. This car represents their society. Everyone is obsessed with
the possibility that one important person could be inside this car. Then they
look up at the airplane and get a glimpse of perspective. Nobody looks at the
car as their attention is turned to larger matters. They have a sudden
realization for just a moment that there is something more to the world than
their gossip and every day life.
